Beyond Binary

We choose cut through rocks and bushes in between “onnazaka (women’s slope)” and “otokozaka (men’s slope)”

In many shrines in Japan, there are two separate paths, called “onnazaka (women’s slope)” and “otokozaka (men’s slope),” that lead to them. “Beyond Binary” documents our performance at a mountain in Japan on which there is a shrine with separate paths for men and women. Together with Tsukuru Fors, who is transgender, Tomorrow Girls Troop members choose neither path and cut through rocks and bushes in between “onnazaka” and “otokozaka.” This act represents the will of resistance. Questioning a society that imposes the gender binary, in our performance, we expressed the creation of a new path in order to survive and to shape the future.
